How You Can Earn Credits

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program is an evidence-informed educational initiative designed to support, enhance and promote the continuing professional development (CPD) activities of physicians and surgeons.

Take advantage of these resources to earn all the credits you need to meet the annual requirements of the MOC Program. Remember to enter your credits into MAINPORT as you complete CPD activities.

Section 1: Group Learning

Meetings and Group Learning: 1 credit per hour for accredited group learning activities. This includes accredited conferences, rounds, journal clubs, etc.

Unaccredited activities: 0.5 credits per hour (maximum 50 credits per cycle). This includes unaccredited rounds, journal clubs, and conferences that have no industry support.

Section 2: Self-Learning

Planned Learning: Initiated by the identification of a need, problem, issue or goal that leads you to develop a learning plan, either independently or with peers or mentors. Activities include:

Fellowships 100 credits per year
Formal courses 25 credits per course
Personal learning projects (PLPs) 2 credits per hour
Traineeships 2 credits per hour

Scanning Activities: Includes resources that you use to enhance your awareness of new evidence, perspectives or findings that may be relevant to your practice. Please record a learning outcome in Mainport for each scanning activity.

Reading Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology 1 credit per article
Podcasts, audio or videotapes 0.5 credits per activity
Viewing scientific posters at a meeting 0.5 credits per activity

Systems Learning:  Includes activities such as development of practice standards, patient safety of quality of care guidelines, curriculum development, or assessment.

Practice guideline development 20 credits per year
Committee work (related to quality care or patient care) 15 credits per year
Curriculum development 15 credits per year
Examination development 15 credits per year
Peer assessment 15 credits per year

Section 3: Assessment

Knowledge assessment: accredited self-assessment programs 3 credits per hour
Performance Assessment — simulation program 3 credits per hour
Chart audit and feedback 3 credits per hour
Multi-source feedback 3 credits per hour
Educational or administrative assessments 3 credits per hour
